Area: 437,822 square miles                                             Population: 29,000,000

Discovered in the year 1499 by Hojeda and Vespucci. The kingdom of Chibcha was made a Spanish Viceroyalty, which included Ecuador. The Wars of Independence against the Spanish domination began in 1810. The state of Columbia, also known for a long time as New Grenada, also included, temporarily, the countries of Panama and Venezuela as well as Ecuador.
