Spitzbergen is a group of mountainous islands in the Arctic Ocean some 360 miles north of Norway. A Norwegian territory, it was probably discovered in 1194, but generally its discovery is credited to William Barents in 1596. Quarrels among many nations involved the whaling industry, but in 1920 a treaty agreed to by claimants awarded the islands to Norway. |

In 1932, the Russian mining company ‘Arktikugol’ began operations in the islands. Tokens are issued which are minted in Leningrad for use by the company in Spitzbergen. |
