Spitzbergen

Area: 23,957 square miles                                                            Population: 4,000

Spitzbergen is a group of mountainous islands in the Arctic Ocean some 360 miles north of Norway. A Norwegian territory, it was probably discovered in 1194, but generally its discovery is credited to William Barents in 1596. Quarrels among many nations involved the whaling industry, but in 1920 a treaty agreed to by claimants awarded the islands to Norway.

Monetary System

In 1932, the Russian mining company ‘Arktikugol’ began operations in the islands. Tokens are issued which are minted in Leningrad for use by the company in Spitzbergen.
