St. Thomas and Prince Islands

Area: 372 square miles                                                               Population: 70,000

The island discovered in 1470 on St. Thomas’s Day (December 21st) was named after this day and the neighboring island, Prince Island, in honor of King Alfons V. The waterwheel in the coat of arms is the personal emblem of King Alfons V. The Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe was declared on July 12, 1975.
